Step-by-Step Guide to Use Articulation Screener

Interface Overview

Ok, let’s dive into the interface you’ll use (see your attached screener image). You’ll see:

  • Picture Flashcard Panel: displays images according to age group.
  • Age-Group Selector: dropdown to choose the child’s age (3.5, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 years).
  • Word Prompt: printed on the back of each picture (e.g., “pie,” “apple,” “cup”).
  • Words by Phonemec Position Cards: Initial, Medial, Final.
  • Error Type Dropdown: Correct, Substitution, Omission, Distortion, Addition.
  • Substitution/Additions Field: blank box to specify the erroneous sound.
  • Submit Button: generates a summary report.

Administering the Test

  1. Select the child’s exact age from the Age-Group dropdown (For example, if the child’s chronological age is 5 years, then you have to administer the test for all age ranges below and including 5 years)
  2. The flashcard appears with all positions: Initial, medial, and final.
  3. Ask the child to name the picture or tap to flip the picture for the written cue.
  4. Observe articulation: Use the Error Type dropdown under each Position Tab.
  5. If Substitution or Addition is chosen, type the produced sound (e.g., the child says “wabbit” for “rabbit,” you’d choose Substitution and enter /w/).
  6. Move through Initial, Medial, and Final for each item.
  7. After doing for all Cards within the age range, click on the “Submit Test” button.
