Response Format for Speech Audiometry: An open-set format means the patient must respond without any prior knowledge of what the possible alternatives might be, whereas a closed-set format means the patient is provided with a choice of several possible response alternatives.
In other words, an open-set item is much like a fill-in question and a closed-set item is much the same as a multiple-choice question.
Open-set:
- Patient repeats or write down the responses / no options gives to the patient
- Suitable for adult with normal speech production
Closed-set:
- There are options. It is suitable for children and results in the greatest scoring accuracy.
